The building embodies the flow of water in the plane and facade. The space is divided into two large modules. There are four exhibition areas with different contents on the first floor. The second floor is a glass platform, which is the commanding height of the entire space. Since water itself has no essential color, the color design of the space focuses on the overall color tone. The lighting is mainly natural light and artificial light. The designer hopes to experience the origin and future of water culture through the refraction of different light, so that people can integrate with water culture in the entire space.

其中“汤” （shāng）意为水流急大的样子。古代有人曾写诗以“吴淞之水震泽来，波涛浩瀚走鸣雷”来形容吴淞江，可见吴淞江古之源浩浩汤汤。吴淞之汤，是自然水文化在历史上的荣誉。“源”，一语双关，即是指水最初流出的地方，吴淞江的水文化代表了上海的由来，是上海水文化之源，也是上海之源。因此该水文化空间的主题为“汤源之境”。整个建筑在平面形态和立面形态上充分体现了水的流动。空间被分为两个的模块。一层为主展区，分为四个区块，展示水文化相关的展品，每个展区之间被设计成了“没有墙的空间”。二层是悬空的玻璃平台，是整个空间的制高点，人们可以俯视整个展馆，从视觉上领略水文化的魅力。在整个空间的设计中，由于水自身没有本质颜色，色彩设计侧重于空间的整体色彩基调，合理的色彩搭配能营造出展区艺术的风格并且赋予艺术情调，也加深了空间的层次感，氛围和时间使得水变得多姿多彩。在灯光的呈现上，以白昼的自然光和夜晚的人造光为主，设计师希望人们通过不同光线的折射感受水文化的过去、现在和未来，让人与水文化在整个空间里融合。
