Food desert is an area that has limited access to affordable and nutritious food, in contrast with an area with higher access to supermarkets or vegetable shops with fresh foods, which is called a food oasis. The designation considers the type and quality of food available to the population, in addition to the accessibility of the food through the size and proximity of the food stores. Like this, the food desert is a very close problem with our lives, but it is not well known. Therefore, I made a book to look at the status of food deserts by country, to remind them of the seriousness of food deserts and to make plans for the future.

식품 사막이란 사막에서 필요한 식품을 구하기 어려운 것처럼 과일, 채소, 무첨가 식품을 판매하는 식료품점이 없어 멀리 가야만 필요한 식품을 구할 수 있는 지역을 일컫는다.식품 사막은 인간 삶의 기본이 되는 의식주와 직결된 문제이기때문에 문제의식을 가지고 해결해 나가려는 의지가 필요하다. 그러나 아직까지 식품 사막에 대한 인식 자체가 미비한 상황이며, 관련 연구나 논의가 이루어지지 않고 있다. 그러므로 국가별 식품 사막의 현황과 실태를 살펴봄으로써 식품 사막의 심각성을 상기시키고 앞으로의 태도를 모색할 수 있도록 인포그래픽 책을 제작하였다. 모래알의 입자가 매우 고운 사막에서는 식물이 살기 힘든 것처럼, 점점 풍화되는 토양을 식품 사막에 처해 척박해져가는 일상에 빗대었다. 신선한 초록에서 흑백의 조각으로 변화하는 그래픽은 또한 복합적이고 다층적인 식품 사막의 요인들을 나타낸다.
