Please introduce a representative project.

After Mayday released their ninth album, History of Tomorrow, they held a nine-day concert series at Taipei Arena, each themed around one of the nine major concepts from their debut onwards, recreating past tours. I participated in two of those themed concerts. We had to think deeply about how to properly recreate shows produced by our senior colleagues over the past decade, how to represent the stage features of nine different tours using the same venue, and how to present different setlists within a limited timeframe. Understanding the intentions of each tour’s original stage designers and reinterpreting them from our team’s current design perspective felt like a dialogue between the past and the present—it was a truly memorable and meaningful experience. One more recent and fascinating project was filming the Mayday Fly to 2023 New Year’s Eve online concert during the pandemic. Unlike typical online concerts shot in a studio or single location, we challenged ourselves by filming in various locations, like a movie production. It was incredibly interesting to experience both concert live production and film-making processes at once. Honestly, every project brings something exciting, which often ends up being the most difficult and challenging part too.

What is the most important element in stage program design?

In the past, I believed music was the most important, but over time I’ve come to realize that the key element in program design is people. The stage, visuals, and lighting design all serve to highlight the artist’s personality and characteristics. Even the same song can appear completely different depending on the artist’s interpretation. And since the audience—the receiver of the performance—is also human, one of the essential goals of a program is to act as a bridge for communication between the artist and the audience. That’s why storytelling is so important in performance design. Additionally, stage design is a collaborative art that integrates space, animation, lighting, music, and script. The backgrounds and composition of the design team also play a crucial role.

How do you communicate with clients?

In concert design, the client relationship feels more like a creative partnership. The performer is part of the performance design itself. From defining the concert’s theme to song selection, musical tone, and the image the performer wants to present on stage, the entire process requires close collaboration and understanding from the production team. That’s how we discover the optimal performance setup for each client. Therefore, frequent two-way communication from the beginning of the project to the very end is essential. We always incorporate client feedback actively to achieve the best possible result.

What are BIN LIVE's strengths in large-scale performance planning and design strategy?

Performance design is the integration of various creative disciplines. BIN LIVE has in-house teams specializing in stage design, animation visuals, and lighting, enabling us to effectively combine these elements into cohesive, high-impact experiences. Additionally, we have technical teams that support stage equipment and engineering, allowing us to bring creative concepts to life with full technical backing. One of our key strengths is our ability to utilize the latest technologies and state-of-the-art equipment to deliver high-quality performances. With clear and responsive communication, we ensure that we fully understand the client’s needs and expectations and use that insight to produce the best possible outcome. Our international experience also allows us to reflect diverse cultures and trends in our designs. These combined strengths enable us to create innovative, original performances that leave a lasting impression on audiences.

Is there a type of stage you’d like to challenge yourself with, or a dream collaboration partner?

Currently, LED screens are widely used in performances, but I would love to take on the challenge of creating a stage that conveys its message without using any LED screens. At the moment, most of our projects are in the Chinese-speaking world due to language and cultural factors, but I hope to have more opportunities to produce concerts abroad in the future. Working with artists from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds would allow us to create even richer, more diverse performances. Collaborating with global designers and clients we haven’t yet worked with would be incredibly exciting. Seeing performance design from different perspectives is always a valuable experience. If I could make a wish, I’d love to collaborate with stage designer Es Devlin. I’m constantly inspired by the new perspectives I discover through her stage work.

Do you have any strategies or plans for expanding into international markets?

Yes, we have several strategies in place to expand into international markets. First, we provide local engineering and technical support when international artists perform in Taiwan. Additionally, when artists go on tour abroad, we accompany them and collaborate with local teams in each country—this allows for valuable exchanges of experience and technical know-how. Through these interactions, we broaden our perspective and actively seek outstanding international design teams for potential future collaborations. We’re also building a stronger global presence by participating in a variety of international projects. These efforts will not only increase recognition for BIN LIVE in the broader market but also open up new growth opportunities on a global scale.
