I am Huang Cheng-Xuan, Director of T.M Design Studio in Taiwan. At T.M Design, we focus not only on the appearance and functionality of each design, but also pay meticulous attention to every detail. From the early stages of conceptualizing a space to deeply understanding the needs of its future occupants, we refine and express each element with precision. Whether it's a residential, commercial, or public space, we always adhere to a philosophy of delicate design—one that breathes a unique vitality and atmosphere into every environment. Grounded in this philosophy, we strive to create spaces that are both functional and beautiful, reflecting the real experiences and needs of their users.

Please introduce a particularly memorable project.
One particularly memorable project for us is the "Turning Point" residence. This project reinterpreted the flow of movement within the space, breaking away from the original structural framework to redefine the layout. Through the blending and intersection of spaces—balancing various planes and angles—we aimed to cultivate a stronger sense of connection among family members. The significance of this project lies not only in the spatial redesign but also in encouraging users to rethink their experience of space. By expanding visual perspectives, segmenting zones, and embedding interaction into the details, we created a quiet, harmonious environment where people and space—space and space—engage in silent dialogue. Ultimately, the design transforms the home into more than a place of residence—it becomes a source of serenity and human connection.

What do you prioritize before starting a design project?
We place the highest priority on understanding the client’s needs and the characteristics of the space. At the start of a project, we engage in in-depth conversations and interviews to fully comprehend the client's preferences, expectations, and goals. We ask about their lifestyle, daily routines, usage patterns, hobbies, family structure, and other factors that may influence their living environment. This helps us understand the specific expectations regarding the space’s functionality, style, and atmosphere, enabling us to design a place where they can truly live and work comfortably. In addition, we emphasize the practical usability and functionality of the space. We apply Louis Kahn’s concept of “served and servant spaces” to our work—not merely focusing on the appearance and style of a space, but ensuring it supports the client's daily activities and lifestyle more effectively and efficiently. These elements form the foundation of our design process, and we strive to deliver a final outcome that aligns with the client’s expectations and needs through continuous feedback and refinement.

How do you incorporate Louis Kahn’s concept of “served and servant spaces” into your work?
Louis Kahn’s concept emphasizes the separation and integration of different functional zones, which we actively apply in our space planning. It allows us to break free from fixed spatial structures and develop new architectural layouts. By clearly defining the order, form, and function of spaces, we can enhance efficiency and clarity in design. We distinctly separate functional zones such as public and private areas based on practical needs and spatial characteristics, ensuring that each zone harmonizes both visually and functionally. For example, in layout design, we pay close attention to circulation, furniture arrangement, and storage planning. At T.M Design Studio, we work closely with clients to emphasize the actual usability and functionality of the design. This approach enables us to create aesthetically pleasing yet highly practical spaces that offer superior quality and comfort.

What is your main focus in the rapidly changing design industry?
“Innovation” is always the core value we pursue in our design process. This includes fresh design concepts, styles, and technological advancements. With the progress of technology, we now incorporate tools such as virtual reality, augmented reality, and smart home systems into our work. These technologies allow us to offer more personalized design solutions. As the demand for customization continues to grow, we remain focused on innovation, sustainability, personalized service, and ongoing learning and professional development to meet our clients’ evolving expectations.
