Heavy snowfalls are common in that area. Although snow can be perceived as troublesome, we aimed to create a new, sustainable place that treats snow as a gift from nature. We tried to keep the parts of the buildings that are registered tangible cultural properties of Japan and yet giving the hotel a new atmosphere. The complex consists of traditional Japanese houses built in the 19th century and afterwards relocated to this site. In order to revive the old buildings, we refrained from adding too many new elements, but instead created a completely different impression by taking unnecessary parts of the original buildings away.

この地域は積雪が2mを超える豪雪地帯である。建物は19世紀に建てられた古民家を移築してつくられており、豪雪に耐えるための骨太で重厚な佇まいを今に残している。一部は国の登録有形文化財に指定されている。大きな池をもつ大庭園もただの庭ではなく、屋根から落ちてきた雪を解かすための機能を担っている。雪国の建築は雪に対峙するために、極めて機能的で即物的な形状をもつ。しかし、雪への抵抗は、ともすれば自然との関係を切断することにもつながってしまいがちである。建築が雪や寒さから人を守ろうとするあまり、豊かな自然の恵みを遠ざけてしまう。国の指定文化財である坂戸山を借景としてもち、街なかに在りながら豊かな環境に囲まれているこの龍言がまさにそうであった。我々が試みたのは、建物の閉塞的な要素をすべて取り除くことであった。窓もなく閉ざされた長い廊下を外部化して風景や風との接点を増やし、風通しを確保するために一部の棟を解体した。徹底的な引き算のデザインを行い、建築と自然を接続が接続されることで、歴史を引継ぎながら雪国の四季の豊かさという全く新しい価値を感じることのできるryugonへと生まれ変わった。
