Japan is a country with ﬂourishing traditional crafts, each with more than centuries of history being part of our every day life. However, due to changes in lifestyles, the market for crafts is shrinking as for the communities of craftsmen, resulting in shortage of successors; Japan is in the crisis of losing its own traditions. We explore the possibility of “cutting edge traditional crafts” which blend in our modern lifestyle, by combining art, design, technology to traditional craft making techniques. We have observed that such approach is eﬀective in reintroducing crafts to the markets and in reinvolving the younger craftsmen.

日本は各地で様々な伝統工芸が花開いた国です。伝統工芸は、何世紀にも渡り私たちの生活に深く根付いていました。しかしながら、ライフスタイルの変化により伝統工芸の市場は縮小してきており、職人のコミュニティもまた縮小を免れていません。これは伝統技術の継承者不足という問題を起こし、引いては、日本は伝統の消失という危機に直面しています。私たちは、伝統工芸の技術にアートとデザイン、テクノロジーを組み合わせることで、現代のライフスタイルに即した「最先端の伝統工芸」の可能性を探っています。1年以上に及ぶこれまでの取り組みから、私たちはこのアプローチが伝統工芸に再び市場の光を当て、若い職人の育成に貢献すると考えています。
