MIMIC GIMMICK visualizes the global trend of imitation-driven cosmetic surgery through the metaphor of the mimic octopus. Just as the octopus imitates other sea creatures to survive, people in appearance-obsessed societies undergo surgery to replicate others’ looks. Using data from eight countries, the project reinterprets statistics into tentacle-inspired graphics within an interactive pop-up book. Die-cut pages and sliding charts invite viewers to physically engage with the data, raising awareness about the loss of identity through imitative surgery and encouraging appreciation for authentic, individual beauty.

MIMIC GIMMICK은 글로벌 미용성형 담론에서 나타나는 무분별한 모방 현상을 ’흉내문어(Mimic Octopus)’라는 메타포로 시각화한 프로젝트이다. 흉내문어가 생존을 위해 다른 해양생물을 완벽하게 모방하듯, 외모지상주의 사회 속 사람들은 타인의 외모를 따라하는 성형을 선택한다. 8개국의 성형수술 데이터를 수집해 흉내문어의 다리를 연상시키는 그래픽 형태로 재해석했다. 팝업 북 구조로 문어의 입체감과 볼륨감을 표현했으며, 컷팅된 페이지 사이로 삽입된 슬라이드 형식의 그래프는 문어 다리를 잡아당기는 듯한 물리적 경험을 제공하고자 했다. 각 페이지 커팅을 통해 구조적 깊이와 표면 질감을 구현하고, ‘흉내’라는 주제의 반복성과 중첩성을 시각적으로 드러냈다. 본 프로젝트를 통해 자신의 정체성을 지우는 모방 성형 문화에 대한 경각심을 가지고, 각자의 고유한 아름다움을 발견하고 존중하는 문화가 형성되기를 바란다.
