In Buddhism, lotus lanterns are not mere symbols of mourning but represent the light of enlightenment and virtue. This project translates this worldview into visual language, depicting South Korea’s causes of death and mortality from 1998 to 2023 as lotus lanterns. The layered forms of each lantern symbolize life and death cycles, while data density and color contrast reveal where life meets death. By framing cold statistics in a warm, symbolic form, the work conveys death not as fear or finality, but as a transition and a process of enlightenment, offering a visual narrative that explores the cyclical essence of human existence.

불교에서 연등은 단순한 애도의 상징이 아니라, 죽음을 통해 이어지는 깨달음과 공덕의 빛을 의미한다. 본 프로젝트는 이러한 불교적 세계관을 시각 언어로 확장하여, 1998년부터 2023년까지의 대한민국 사망 원인 및 사망자 수 데이터를 ‘연등’의 형태로 시각화하였다. 각 연등의 겹겹이 쌓인 형태는 생과 사의 순환, 즉 ‘윤회’를 상징하며, 데이터의 밀도와 색채의 명암은 삶과 죽음이 맞닿는 경계를 드러낸다. 이를 통해 죽음을 공포나 종결이 아닌, 또 다른 생으로의 전환과 깨달음의 과정으로 바라보는 불교적 시선을 전달하고자 했다. 차가운 통계 데이터에 따뜻한 상징적 형태를 입힘으로써, 죽음을 재조명하고 그 안에서 인간 존재의 순환적 의미를 탐구하는 새로운 시각적 서사를 제시한다.
