"As the founder of the Asia Design Prize, I have always believed that design is more than an achievement to be awarded—it is a voice to be heard, a heritage to be preserved, and a bridge that connects cultures. Over the past decade, our platform has grown on the principles of fairness, respect, and inclusivity. Yet growth also brings responsibility. As we look ahead to the future of the Asia Design Prize, it is our duty to ensure that the language we use reflects not only who we are today but also the values we hope to pass on to generations of designers. And so, we are redefining one important word that we have often used."
1. Introduction – The Power of Language and the Role of a Design Platform
For more than a decade, the Asia Design Prize has grown into one of the most respected and fair design awards. Today, however, we are moving beyond the role of a traditional awards ceremony. Our mission is to discover the creative heritage of Asia and share it with the world. In this journey, the choice of language carries profound meaning. Language is not only a tool of communication but also a reflection of our values and philosophy.
2. The Limitations of the Word “Country”
Traditionally, many international awards have categorized submissions by “Country.” While this approach may seem straightforward, it often places diverse cultural and creative identities into a single administrative label. Such a framework does not fully capture the richness and variety of design. Design, by nature, is not confined to borders. It is a universal cultural practice that transcends boundaries and belongs to all humanity.
3. A New Alternative – The Adoption of “Area”
For this reason, the Asia Design Prize will no longer use the word “Country.” Instead, we introduce “Area” as our official terminology. “Area” acknowledges cultural and geographical contexts without imposing limitations. Every designer has the right to define and choose their own area, reflecting their identity and background. The Asia Design Prize fully respects and accepts all such choices without restriction.
4. Philosophical Foundation – Design Exists Beyond Borders
Design is not the property of one place. It is a cultural and creative legacy shared by humanity across time and geography. The language we adopt expresses the worldview we pursue. By introducing “Area,” the Asia Design Prize conveys its philosophy more clearly:
Design speaks the language of culture. Design is about sharing, not ownership. Design creates connection, not separation.
With this foundation, the Asia Design Prize positions itself as a cultural platform, where the creative assets of Asia are preserved, celebrated, and shared with the world.
5. Our Responsibility as a Global Platform
The adoption of “Area” is not a minor change in terminology; it is a declaration of our vision for the future. As a global design platform, the Asia Design Prize commits to the following responsibilities:
Respect for Cultural Diversity –
Highlighting both traditional and contemporary achievements across Asia.
Ensuring Neutrality –
Remaining free from external agendas and focusing purely on design.
Respect for Participant Autonomy –
Allowing every participant to define their own area, thereby honoring their creative identity.
Strengthening Global Accessibility –
While rooted in Asia, we use language and systems that are universally understood.
6. Conclusion – Legacy Beyond Asia
This transition in language is part of our commitment to living our brand slogan, “Legacy Beyond Asia.” The Asia Design Prize is not simply about honoring achievements; it is about building a platform that discovers, preserves, and shares Asia’s creative heritage with the world. Language is not trivial—it is a declaration of who we are and what we stand for. From this point forward, the Asia Design Prize will speak the language of “Area,” not “Country.” We will approach design as a matter of culture and creativity, offering the most inclusive, fair, and respectful stage for every designer’s voice and choice.
